    C2:67 Carburetor Gasket Sealant

What's the best gasket sealant for carburetors: secondary metering plate, main body to throttle plate, and for mounting on the manifold? I'm using those blue gaskets for the fuel bowls so that I don't have to change them to readjust the floats (3810 non-externally adjustible fuel bowls) but I'd like to do a good seal job on the other cork and fiber gaskets.

if the carbs surfaces are ture and flat no sealer is ever needed and if the surfaces are not true and flat get them that way. remember RTV should NEVER be used with gasoline

      Gerald and clem----

I agree completely. No gasket sealer should be needed on any of the carb gaskets and none was ever used originally. If you need to use sealer, something's wrong with the parts you're trying to seal.

Also, like clem says, you can't use most RTVs on anything exposed to gasoline. There are special flurosilicone RTVs that can be used on gasoline-exposed sealing areas. However, you usually won't find these in an auto parts store and they're VERY expensive. Even if you had this material, though, you wouldn't want to use it, or any other sealer, on the carburetor sealing as already described.

I agree with the above, at least in theory, but sometimes there is a real world. In that world, the metering plate will always warped. A little paste epoxy in the right place solves the common Holleyitis problems.

          Wayne,

That's what I'm afraid of. The guy before me had this black stuff on both sides of the secondary metering plate. I had a hard time getting the plate and aluminum cover plate off, and I think I may have slightly bent the thin steel plate. It took a night of soaking in lacquer thinner to get the black stuff off. And then buffing with a wire wheel to get the remnants off.
The aluminum cover plate was actually etched in the gas passages over the years.

          Any suggestions?

if the surfaces are not true and flat using 2 gaskets on each surface will help take up the difference.

The problem is that two gaskets accentuate the cause of the problem. It may cure the symptoms for a while, but will tend to warp the plate even more.

the need for 2 gaskets unless you are going to do the correct straighting is because the metering body and the float bowl make metal to metal contact with the adjoining surface preventing a single gasket to be compressed to form a seal. this is no replacement for correcting the warped parts but it will work.
