    C2_Convertible top lid hinge assembly

The outboard screw on the assembly is very difficult to get to with the spring in place. It would be easily accessible with the spring removed. Is there a recommended method of removing the spring while the assembly is still installed?

Find someone with arms that look like tree trunks.

Teh service manual used a cup arrangement that was inserted into the spring while extended (lid down) and then when you opened the lid, the spring was loose.

I have used pry bars and fulcrums to get the leverage and all I can say is be careful. There is a lot of force in an awkward area and you can slip very easily.

Steve, The top screws are in a tough place to access, but they will come out using a bit of spray and 1/4 inch drive.I just did mine. Take your time, on mine, the nuts on the backing plate inside the rear upper support fell off. All that was left were four nice round holes. I have a solution for this, not pretty, but it will work to remount the hinge.

I did not want to chance the springs letting go and rebounding off the underside of the deck. That has a tendency to crack the glass and the paint. While your in the area I suggest you ensure the drain holes are clear. There are two in the channel in the deck top and two, one on each side, over the rear tire. Also, check where the fiberglass is joined on each side for leaks. If you find them, seal them. If there is a leak in this area, rain water gets in and rusts the spring bottoms and the bottom of the hinge where the springs attach.

Also, I suggest you media blast the hinge, prime and paint, use new screws/bolts.

      Have Fun

        Spring

When you close the lid it will exspant the spring you can place some flat bar stock inbettween the coils and open lid all the way and the spring will fall out this is a safe proceedure I have done it many times works on hood hindges too. It is a lot easier to get at bolt with spring removed.
