I was able to obtain an original FI Air Cleaner for my 58 project. It has been "restored" by sandblasting and repainting, however, it is also apparent that the surface was rusted and pitted when this was done. The unit is quite solid and my question is, should I sandblast, fill the surface and repaint or leave it like it is? I plan to have the car judged. Also, the wing nut and threaded rod are two pieces which the seller told me is wrong. Is there a source for this piece or an easy way to make one? Thanks in advance for the help.

Factory originals had clean, smooth sheet metal surfaces, so evidence of underlying pit that's been painted over will probably result in condition point deduction(s). The decision on whether on not you should strip the existing paint, fill the pit, sand the surface smooth and re-paint is one of personal pride in restoration--how close to factory fresh do you want your restoration to be?
On the wing nut, I don't find it listed in the 'usual' Corvette parts catalogs. You may have to call one and ask (Paragon's policy is to help by breaking out 'kitted' components and selling them separately on request) or go to one of the straight-axle specialty houses like Grossmueller's or Mary Jo...- Top
