A reproduction is available and the "Good Doctor" can fix you right up with one for about 15 bucks, or so. I think that the reproduction might have the stainless or aluminum insert, though.

Re: 68 wiper over ride knob? What did it look like

      Joe -

Thanks. As I am restoring my car, I am getting very familiar with the repro market. I do have the advantage of having almost all of the old parts to compare. In this case, however, there was never an old part and I found this discussion very interesting as I never got my question answered at the dealer's when I bought the car. I don't think I have used the wiper override more than 4 or 5 times in the 37 years that I have owned the car so using a small plier or wrench to turn the hex shaft did not seem much of a problem. The .69 new cars that I saw had a cheap black plastic knob that was round and was elongated to extend past the two vacuum pulls. It sure looked like a knee-knocker to me.

Anyway, as always I enjoy these discussions

Re: 68 wiper over ride knob? What did it look like

My original owner 68's owners manual First Edition August 1967 has three pages in the owners manual which show the wiper overide knob on the left with the two pull down switches on the right side of the wiper overide knob. The location of the assembly is shown to the right of the steering column at the bottom of the dash panel. This February built car has the assembly under the steering column.

The illustration that you are refering to is for early 68's. Early production cars did have the offset switches.

Does the owner's manual tell how to operate the override? This would help answer whether the car left the factory with it.

Joe, you would not believe how many Corvette owners brought their cars into our shop saying the wipers would not come on. All we had to do was turn that knob for them. I even "fixed" one by phone for a man who was going to take his wiper motor off and ship it to us for repair.

Reba on page 20 of my August 1967 First Edition owners manual it tells how to use the overide switch to stop the wiper blades on the windshield by turning the "overide switch control knob" and is in darker different type print. It also has at the bottom right side of the page under the above instructions "Caution: Never leave the overide switch in the "On" position since this will discharge the battery."

Re: 68 wiper over ride knob? What did it look like

My June built car has the assembly located to the left of the steering wheel, at the bottom of the dash panel directly under the speedometer. The knob is all black plastic, no inserts. The wiper overide switch is between the other two overide pull down switches. In other words, totally different from what the Owner's manual shows.

                    Please post your 68 configuration.

Mine is a May built 68 and my wiper switch is located directly under the steering colum. Please post where you switches are located and the month and day of build if possible. Thanks, Terry

                      Terry,
I'll have to re-find the chart that tells me what day, but I do remember mine was built the first week or two of June. The location and orientation is per my previous post.

My 68 coupe was built August 5, 1968 and the switch is in the middle of the two pull down switches. The entire assembly is mounted directly underneath the steering column. As I mentioned earlier, I have a chrome knob! Guessing aftermarket knob.

                              Is this correct?...

Your car is built June wiper switch to left of colum.
Mark's car built August wiper switch under colum.
Mine is built May wiper switch under colum.
Jim's is built Feb wiper switch under colum.
                              Rich's is built July ?

I may have all these dates screwed up....but your june car is in the middle of a bunch of 68's with the switch mounted under the steering colum. Hmmmm, interesting. We need more people to report on there cars. Terry

There will be a survey questionaire forthcoming on this and other 68-69 items. I will be out in about 30-45 days. For the old geezers out there that remember the one done in the mid 90's, this is an update. We believe that with the popularity of the internet we can get quite a few more cars surveyed.

Stay tuned, same station, same channel.
