    C1 - '62 re-instal Fuel Tank

I'm ready to re-install the fuel tank and looking for suggestions/tips on the process.

    1. Should the Bands be installed before lowering the tank into place? If so, any suggestions on how to keep the straps out of the way?

    2. Should the filler hose be attached to the tank before lowering the tank into place and then "feel around" and get the filler neck to slide into the filler hose and then tighten both hose clamps?

Any suggestions will be appreciated, as usual.

    Thanks

    Re: C1 - '62 re-instal Fuel Tank

I just completed installing a tank from quanta,Boy was it a tight fit. I used reproduction straps and pre bent them in a vice to copy the excisting original rusty straps I had.I then oiled the inside of the rubber hose and slipped it on the filler neck and tightened the clamp on the filler next tightly.then just slid the other clamp on,slid the neck into place from the inside towards the out side and then taped it temporerorly up out of the way sticking out of the gas caps door.

I then kind of unbent the straps slightly and slipped them into position.I then slid in the tank and kind of rotated it into place,The problem I had was my reproduction tank was larger then the original (as if some one blew it up with air pressure too much and exspanded it) any ways I had to get under the car to raise/rotate the front of the tank into place thru where the straps mount while I was pushing the back of the tank in and down. What I thought was going to be an hour job turned into the better part of the day.In order to connect the straps to there bolt boss's I had to run a 4"x 1/4" nut and bolt to pull the strap closer to the boss.Once I had it close I removed the 1/4" nut and bolt and install the proper lenght bolt.

    Good luck

I forgot to add once the tank was in place ( and the cover went on no problem) I then untapped my filler neck and attached it to the tank opening. I then installed the rubber grommet last

        REPRO TANK vs ORIGINAL

Are the repro tanks slightly larger? I guess we are fortunate to have them available since for a long while they weren't. However, if you have an original in good shape why replace it? Mine has some minor surface rust on the outside and will need cleaning. I can replace the sender and recondition and clean. I am considering tin plating to recondition and preserve, which can be done for the approximate cost of replacing with a repro.

          Clare

My tank was absolutly bigger,The best way I could describe it was as if some one leak tested with too high of air pressure. The car I am building is not a factory correct style car,So for me it was a no brainer to replace it.

Mine was rusty on the seams and had some type of solder repair done On the bottom of it.

Locally we lost our last gas tank, radiator shop due to D.E.C. regulations There is now a bank where the old radiator shop was.
