    steering gear adjustments

I am in the process of checking the adjustments to my steering gear (64 p/s), and am pussled by the description in the shop manual.

In the shop manual "to adjust worm bearings, loosen worm bearing adjuster lock nut and turn worm bearing adjuster until there is no percoptible end play in worm. I can't see any "adjuster"... once I loosen the large lock nut at the back of the box what do I turn ?...

In the next step (after adjusting the worm) the manual references a "mark" on the top of the wormshaft just below the coupling clamp. I can't find any such "mark" (do you need to remove the coupler to see this?...anyone have a picture?...

    Re: steering gear adjustments

I think it's a mistake to attempt any adjustments on the car. These are precision adjustments and you should remove the gear and do it on the bench with a suitable small scale torque wrench, but as long as it's out you may as well overhaul it, get is set up right, and put it back in the car for another forty years.

An article on steering gear overhaul will be published in The Corvette Restorer - maybe by the Summer issue.
