    '65 Milano Maroon paint

    Hi everyone

this is my first post on here so I hope it works.

I have a '65 coupe that was body-off restored just before i purchased it last year. Everything was done except the paint and it's in the shop now getting a new paint job.
We choose to go with BC/CC instead of lacquer (it's an excellent driver car - I don't take it to NCRS judging so I'm not worried about not using lacquer paint on her again).

The problem is that my shop's PPG paint supplier is having a very difficult time getting the color tint correct. We have already had 4 sample pints from them and the color is off on each one - either too brown or too red or too much metallic, etc.

has anyone found a good way to match up or a good formula to use to get the correct Milano Maroon color tint using the newer modern BC/CC PPG paints?

After 7 months at the body/paint shop being worked on this seems to be the biggest problem or hold-up we have come across!

    thanks for any help!

    Barry

Use Dupont if you want the correct color and metallic size. PPg almost always has to corse of metallic.Bill

well, the size and level of metallic was a problem in one of the sample mixes.

The shop usually uses PPG products so the sealer and primers are already PPG. Would there be a problem by mixing various brands of products that way?

It is not good to mix products. The metallic in Milano should be very fine , almost hard to see. PPG and some of the other paint companys use a matching system that finds a current use color that looks the same.(looks like the correct color from 10 feet). But most current colors use heavy metallic.Dupont converts the original formulas to the modern paints .I would have him mix & spray some test panels substituting very fine instead of med or course metallic.Once you get the correct metallic then the paint can be tinted . Insist on some test panels that are painted & cleared .Be sure to stay with one paint system....Bill

thanks for the help Bill. One of the samples we recieved so far the metallic was too much but the bigger concern to date has been the actual tint that they haven't been able to get correct.

since we have already started with the PPG products we will have to stick with them. I guess we will have to keep going on a trial and error method until the tint and metallic is correct.
My painter specializes in older Vettes only and with his 30 years experience on them so far he has been able to just look at the paint samples on a stirring stick and know the tint color has been all wrong.

I guess I was hoping someone on here has already come across a similar problem with this particular color on the PPG paints and would be able to tell me what "formula" to use to mix the paints to get the correct color tint. The paint supplier does have an original color chip sample that he is trying to work off of to do the matching but so far hasn't gotten it close enough.
