    Driven mileage points

    Hi all,

Next september I plan to get our Crown Sapphire '59-er judged in the UK. To get there I've two possibilities:

    1) Via channel tunnel which is app. 500km.
    2) Via Rotterdam and take the boat to Harwich which is app. 200km + the distance the boat is travelling.

How are the driven mileage points are determined considering the boat travelling ?

To calculate the driven mileage points I persume kilometers are first translated in miles and then calculated as stated in section 3, paragraph 2 of the judging reference manual...

    greetings,
    Rob.

    Re: Driven mileage points

Similar questions arose at the Australian Chapter Meet outside Sydney last weekend, Rob. The miles vs. km issue caused out tabulations staff to double check and they found a couple of 'opps' cases where members wrote in km vs. miles simply by habit and, yes, the bonus is computed based on MILES so there needed to be a conversion calculation. I've got a hunch that Roy Sinor is considering a change in form format sometime in the future since he was able to see the 'issue' at work....

Back to your question, here's the answer. When you arrive at the meet and finish registration of your car for Flight Judging, you'll be asked to provide information that's particular to you. You'll be asked to check box whether you drove or trailered the car to the event and next to the check box will be a blank line for you to indicate the number of miles you traveled.

You write in the exact odometer reading, so the figure represents actual milage and not 'as the crow flies' milage. This means it's perfectly legitimate for you to drive from home to London by way of Moscow, Rome, Etc... It's an 'honor' system as the club doesn't have milage driven 'police' out there checking to see that you actually drove the car on public roadways vs. hiring its cartage by truck/train....

Since the figure is supposed to be actual milage based on your odometer, the transit by ferry won't count. UNLESS, you get the captain's permission to drive the car in a circle on deck while crossing the channel!

Once your car has been Flight Judged, tabulators add up the car's raw score (X points out of 4500 possible) and divide to get a percentage (one decimal place accuracy). Then, they divide the milage driven declaration by 100 and concantenate at the first decimal place.

Example: 999 miles -> 9.9 and that's the bonus adder to your Flight Score. There are a few other provisos however. First, your car must earn a legitimate 3rd Flight or better on its own merit in order to qualify for the milage driven bonus. Second, the bonus may NOT raise a car's final score by more than 10% nor may it raise the award outcome by more than one position (eg, 3rd Flight -> 2nd Flight but not to Top Fight).

Last, YES, it IS possible for a car to score ABOVE 100% with the use of milage driven bonus points! The calculation rules are given in the NCRS Judging Reference Manual (the 'white' book) and you can double check my narration.... Have FUN in the UK and, who knows, maybe I'll cross that pond this year to 'play' with you!
