Re: tranny codes
BLT-1-----
There are two ways of identifying the transmission. First, if there is a metal tag attached to the side-cover it will have a part number on it. I may be able to identify it from that information, but I can't provide a list of the various part numbers as there are far too many.
Another way to identify it is by the stamped code which is found on the side of the main case. This code will be as follows:
P= Muncie Indiana transmission plant
digit=last number of the MODEL YEAR
alpha character= month of production(transmissions use an unusual code system; post your letter and I'll identify)
two digits= day of month of manufacture
A, B, or C alpha character=trans type(only for units manufactured after October, 1968)
A=M-20
B=M-21
C=M-22In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: tranny codes
Were all 3 transmissions available in 71 M-20, M-21, M-22. Options list for that year I thought only showed for the 21 & 22. I've found my VIN from the tranny that I had written down when I first got the car. C11S102709 but I didn't get any other #'s at that time I was just checking to see if it had most of it's original parts. I will be able to check the rest once I get into my storage of parts remembering I have the original case and such in a box due to it having lunch one day on a large piece of the reverse gear I have another muncie in the car right now.- Top

Re: tranny codes
BLT-1------
For 1971, all three Muncie transmission models were available---M-20, M-21, and M-22. Only the M-21 and M-22 were OPTIONS, though. That's because, by 1971, the M-20 was "standard equipment on Corvettes. 1969 was the last year that 3 speed manual transmissions were "standard equipment".
However, as I mentioned in an earlier message to you, I believe that the M-22 was available only with the LS-6 engine or as part of the ZR-1 and ZR-2 packages. I'll be very interested to hear what you find of your transmission part number and/or transmission code.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: tranny codes
Joe,
Take a look at the production numbers for M22 for 1970-1972. I think you will find that 1971 was only year of those 3 that M22 was available as option seperate from the powertrain packages you mention.

Yes, 1971 was, for sure, the only year of the 1970-72 period that the M-22 was available as a seperate option and outside of the ZR-1/ZR-2 packages. However, as far as I know, as a seprate option it was available only with the LS-6 engine option. Of course, it is unclear whether the number reportedly produced(130)includes the ZR-1/ZR-2 package cars. But, either way, the number seems very consistent with the limitation of the "seperate option" M-22 to LS-6 cars.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
