    66 427/425 dress detail

Had my engine rebuilt - should have taken detailed pictures before apart - a few question for original L72 owners

    - does the radio strap at the motor mount go on the passenger side ?
    - does exhaust stud bolt go in front hole on the pass side ?
    - is the heater hose fitting at the water pump painted or oversprayed ?

    Thanks

Re: L72 with PS has the stud !

I fiqured this out ! Re the exhaust manifold bolts - there is one bolt that has a stud protruding from the hex head. I realized what it was after the post - actualy - feel quite foolish for even asking now - I have an original L72 power steering car. With power steering - the 696 alternator is mounted diferently then non-PS - with one of the bracket holes mouted on the fwd drivers side manifold bolt with stud !. You would not have been familiar with this if your L72 cars did not have that option ! That bolt is similar to the top pass side water pump bolt.

      Peter -

A.I.M. shows the radio ground strap from the engine mount to the frame on the driver's side. Heater hose nipples (not the bypass hose nipples) were installed at St. Louis, thus are not painted.

Thanks for the response John. Everette O and I where just conferring re fuel pump push rod plug - was it installed at Tonawanda and thus painted. I assume the fuel pump was installed in St Louis ?

Since engines were test run at the point of mfgr using a propane fixure, there was no need for fuel pump, fuel lines & carb. Your copy of the AIM should show the fuel pump attaching bolts being installed at St. Louis hence they wouldn't have been painted....

On the push rod plug bolt, it had to be long enough to effectively pinch & hold the push rod during shipment and couldn't have been installed during engine test as the rod had to move freely on initial engine fire. Once received at St. Louis, the existing shipment bolt 'might' have been removed and used as one of the two fuel pump mounting bolts, but a shorter plug bolt (one that couldn't reach/pinch the pump rod) had to have been installed.

I'll bet John Hinckley can nail this issue for us down tight!

            Peter----

The L-72 fuel pump push rod NPT plug was insatlled at St. Louis. Therefore, I doubt that it was painted.

The fuel pump pushrod was installed at St. Louis on all engines, as was the access hole plug on BB's, so as Joe points out below, the BB plug was not painted. Only the SB engines had the configuration with the thread-sealed "shipping bolt" and hole that went through the front of the block into the pushrod cavity.
