    63 radio problem

I'm having a reception problem with the AM / FM radio in my 63. I had the radio serviced and the repairman bench tested it. It worked fine. If I am near the radio towers the reception is good, however I live 20 miles from Boston and can only get one or two AM stations and no FM stations. I am assuming I need to adjust the radio. Do I have to remove the radio to do this and what is the proper procedure for this adjustment?
    Thanks for the assistance.

    Bob,

I believe there is a tuning screw behind one of the knobs to fine tune your antenna. The repair technician should be able to give you more details but I think you just turn the screw to get maximum reception.

Before you go bonnkas with a high tech fix, lets look at it more simplely....
Put up your antenna. Beleive it or not the fix could be that simple. The ASW (Antenna Signal Wavelength) is dependant on the antenna because the entire car is fiberglass. So the antenna has to be extended....WBIG, WMEX, WBZ all should work just fine, I originally come from LYNN..and never had a problem, just extent the antenna....

Also check the connection of the antenna to the cable in the back. Corrosion can take place there and cause a problem. My '63 was doing the same thing. I replaced the cable with a later year version that has a rubber boot on the antenna end. It works great now.

I will try the antenna at different heights. The antenna is new and has a good connection. I think the fine tuning is the problem. I am guessing that the radio has to be removed to work the adjusting screw if it is below the tuning knob.

As I recall, the "trimmer" screw on midyears in behind/under the passengers side trim panel. You should be able to take that off easily. You should find a small screw within a "washer like" cone. That's the trimmer.

Set the AM radio to a strong station near 1500 AM. Antenna all the way up. Turn the screw...in and/or out till you get the loudest reception.

This works for AM. Do you have the ground plate under the antenna? Is the antenna grounded to it? Grounded to the frame too? Check those things also. Hope this helps. Chuck

The 63 Shop Manual has a good section on troubleshooting and the radio assembly. It's pretty straightforward. Biggest probelms seem to be grounding and the antenna t*******.
