I am having my calipers rebuilt and am trying to locate a "correct" Master Cylinder for my 1978. I have tried about a dozen parts houses but they all only carry the Durastop replacement. Any advice on where to source on would be greatly appreciated.

If you could find an NOS GM PART #18002069 you'd be all set. I don't think that you'll find one of these too easily, though. It was used for 1977-78 only and and it was discontinued and replaced by the GM #18005307 in November, 1979. The 18005307 should be the same except that it has metric-sized mounting holes on the flange. This unit was discontinued and replaced by the GM #18014644 in December, 1986. The latter part is the one still available today. It's the "generic" casting which is manufactured for GM by some "outside entity" (likely, Wagner or Raybestos). It's a quality piece, but not correct in configuration.
All is not lost, though. While obtaining an NOS unit might be hard to do, obtaining a sleeved, original casting or, even, just a core to have sleeved and rebuilt should not be too hard. The 77-82 style master cylinders are not rare, at all. I don't know what the casting number is on these master cylinders (but, I'd like to know for those of you that might have a known or suspected original on your car). However, these master cylinders have no bleeder valves and they have no "half-moon" machined area on the front. I believe they were a Delco casting, though.
If I were you, I'd contact one of the major Corvette brake rebuilders like Stainless Steel Brakes Corp of Clarence, NY or Vette Brakes of Tampa/Clearwater, FL. Both sell sleeved master cylinders on an outright basis. Tell them that you want an original 1978 casting; they should know exactly what that is.
Also, you might try White Post Restorations (www.whitepost.com) or Apple Hydraulics (www.applehydraulics.com). These folks sleeve brake master cylinders in brass (my preference), but I don't know if they can supply the core, or not.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: C3-Master Cylinder-1978
Barry,
I found an original brake booster and master cylinder assembly for my 76 on Ebay. The car was built within 10 days of mine so the dates were right on. Ebay is a good place to look as long as you know up front what a fair price is and stick to it.- Top
