The warning light problem is likley due to a defective, misaligned, or misadjusted headlight warning switch located on each headlight door assembly.

The "hiss" you hear may be due to a loose connection of one of the vacuum hoses at the headlight switch. It could also be due to a defective switch. The leak may not be sufficient to cause headlight door lift problems now, but it will in the future. Also, the vacuum leak should be corrected for other reasons.

I don't know how to test or repair them. Frankly, I wouldn't bother. If this is the original switch, bear in mind that there were some durability problems with these switches (even though yours might have lasted 34 years). Later iterations of the switch were improved. The 68-76 switch is discontinued, but available in reproduction. I believe that the reproductions are made on the GM tooling.

Check continuity across the switch as you activate the plunger.

Remove the harness connector, and touch ohmeter probes to the switch terminals...if the ohm reading changes from infinity (open) to some nominal ohm value (closed) as you activate the plunger, the switch is OK. If the ohm reading remains constant as you activate the plunger, el switcho es no bueno.
