'69 Upper Radiator Hardware

Hello All, Can anyone tell me the proper finish for the upper radiator support hardware. Hardware: Two bolts & washers each side & support Four bolts w/ center support


Ref.: I have a late '69 SB with Brass Radiator & two piece plastic shroud.

I am fairly certain that the bolts on either side upper support brackets are zinc plated. They are 5/16-18 bolts, but the two on each side are of slightly different lengths. As a result of this fact, they may have different headmarkings. There is also, I believe, a zinc-plated external star washer used with each bolt.


The radiator shroud center support bolts, I believe, are indented hex head-type bolts with a black phosphate or black oxide finish. They had a captive flat washer. All four bolts were the same.

Check the assembly manual - I believe you will find 3 external lock washers and one split lock washer. I can't remember the positions off the top of my head (old timers disease) - would have to visit the cold car, but the AIM shows this strange configuration. It is one of my favorite judging points.


Wish I knew why they put them together this way - must be some logical reason, but darned if I know.

Yes, you're correct. The upper bolt on the right side bracket uses a flat washer and a split lock washer. The other three bolts use external star washers with no flat washer. I'll add that one to my collection of Corvette trivia.
