Early 63 gas door repair

Can anyone on this elite board of experts tell me if there is any way of opening up the tabs (without breaking them ) that hold the emblem and backing plate in place on an early 63 style gas door? Are they made out of pot metal? Any help would be appreciated as I would like to replace my emblem and have the metal ring rechromed. THanks Len 39247

Len,

If you bend them, you break them. If you replace the emblem with a repo you have destroyed the originality of the door.

Simply purchase a new gas lid door from any vendor of you choice.

jerry cribs of the northeast chapter has been rebuilding the 63 lids for years. think he silver solders the tabs back in place after breaking them to remove the emblem. mike

Len,

Bubba broke the tabs on the back of my 67 gas door. I sent the trim off to be re-chromed and then? It seems bubba epoxied the thing back together, I might have no other choice than the same.

Hi Len...I repaired my early '63 gas lid, inserting a new emblem, with moderate success; it passed judging for our Chapter meet, and looks quite original I believe. Shoot me an email so I can send you a copy, complete with procedure and pictures. You might be surprised!
