    Chevy Vettefest March 4&5 Chicago

A friend and I are considering a road trip to the the Chevy Vettefest in Chicago in March. I was told that half the 500 cars are Vets. I own a 64 and my friend is in the market for a mid-year. Is this show worth going to? Anything beats Maine in March. January and February for that matter too!!!!

Windy and cold as a , well you know

Hi George: Although I am a Chicago native , now living in Florida, I can't comment on this particular show as it came to being since I left. What I can insure you of is that Maine may well be preferable to the windy city in March, Trust me, don't go unless you trailer your 64, honest.

        George,

I thought that driving these things was like FLYING! Just a little limited in the pitch control and don't want to find out about the lack of roll control.

Let me clarify my last post. Since my friend is interested in purchasing a mid-year, is this particular show a good source to see alot of 63-67's?

            George,

The (only) benefit of the show, IMO, is that it is a show at a time of year when there are no others around the midwest. As someone who drives from Michigan to go to both Bloomington and Carlisle, I usually don't even consider going to this show (it is half the distance of Bloomington) as it always seems to disappoint. Others may love it, but I don't change my schedule to go, and I wouldn't spend money to fly from Maine. Just my thoughts, worth about $.02 if you will.

Geezer here, and I am from Chi-Town (home of the Chi-Town Hustler, if you may recall). This is one of the standard swap-meets/vendor shows/vette shows/etc. It is put on by Chicago Corvette, which, like Mid-America or Corvette Central (both of whome will probable be there), is a supplier to the NCRS trade. I went once, in Nov 97, soon after I bought my '70 350/370, to see what the entire older Corvette scene was all about. It is a bit like Corvette/Carlisle or a smaller version of Bloomington. All the standard vendors and many of the standard junkers. Many nice show cars. When I was there, I saw quite a few mid-years for sale, but who knows what one will find at any particular show. I can't recommend it, but I can't disparage it, either. Probably a good place to get your feet wet, but you will probably find more cars for sale at Carlisle or Bloomington.

                George,

I live in Indianapolis, IN, and friends and I always go to the Nov. and March versions of the Chicago Chevy/Vette Fest. It's what I call a good one day show. It's worth the three hour trip up there and back, and we always have a great time. There's usually a good mix of cars on display, cars for sale, and parts for sale. On the flip side, I'm not sure it would be worthwhile spending money on a hotel to go to this show, let alone flying in from Maine.

George, I don't think it justifies the trip from Maine. There aren't ususally a lot of cars for sale, but you never know. Nowhere near the magnitude of Carlisle or Bloomington. I go every time, but I live in Chicago so it's no effort. I'll probably be there selling a car this time.

I agree with almost every post here. I live across the lake and it isn't a big deal for me to go, (I've gone the last 7 years). Its good because there is nothing going on during the winter here with car shows and swap meets. Its a short drive for me, only about 2 hours. But it isn't worth the plane ticket to me to go, but I go every year. There are mid-year cars for sale, (high price if you ask me), parts to buy, (dealers aren't as apt to negotiate prices because of the cost of their swap meet space), and some unusual and "not so often seen" Corvettes. McCormick has a web site you could check out, www.mccormickplace.com and there have been articles in Super Chevy as well as several Corvette publications. Botom line.......if it were me, I wouldn't spend a plane ticket to go............my $.02.
