Were factory original intake manifold gaskets sculpted to follow the exact pattern of the intake manifold - ie no excess gasket material showing ?

Thats what I've heard... however I sculpted a gasket in that fashion and, lo and behold, the cavities around the exhaust crossover in the manifold were exposed (67 L36 4 barrel). Hummm that doesn't look right. I then referred to my Service Manual which just happened to have a photo of a big block with the gasket in place but the manifold removed (page 6-26 in the manual). I then sculpted a gasket to that configuration and it covered the cavities and fit perfectly. That is my story and I'm stickin' to it!!! -

Peter, if you trim the gasket to the exact shape of the manifold then the cavities around the exhaust crossover will be exposed. I have photos showing that. I don't believe this is correct. Send an e-mail and I'll send the photos.
