    '69 BB side pipe mufflers

Any experience with CCentral's aluminzed side pipe mufflers? Are they 'close enough' for judging purposes? What kind of deduct can I expect?

I am looking to replace my mufflers, and procrastination has caused me to miss a few that were advertised in the Driveline. I am considering the aluminized as an option, but have never seen them up close and would like to know any experiences out there.

    Thanks,
    Jon

Jon, I am not familiar with C Central's aluminized side exhaust, but I am sure it is like all the repro exhaust systems in that, #1 plain carbon steel was the material originally, and #2 the configeration of the bends are not what you would see on original pipes. Originally the bends were rolled. The reproduction pipes have been bent with a male/female shoe. You will find that the insides of the radius are a reduced diameter where the female shoe fits. If you will look at any original pipes and then look at the replacements you will see what I am talking about.

Thanks Dick. Mine are passable, but with some discoloration and scrapes on them. I'd rather lose a couple of condition points than go with obvious replacements - but I'll keep my eye out for some NOS or good used pipes.

      Thanks,
      Jon

Jon, I have cleaned some of the rust on parts using Metal Prep (diluted phosporic acid). Using gloves and eye protection was the parts with a diluted solution, read directions, and wipe down. Then use something like Pre-Lube 6 to wipe down the metal surfaces. Some smoke when you start the car, but does slow down the rust. I used to wipe the pipes on my L/88 every time after driving it. Another tip I learned to help keep bare metal corrosion to a minimum was to park the car on a sheet of vinyl. Holds the moisture down. Even if a vapor barrier was placed under the slab of concrete when it was poured you will have some moisture.

Dick, Very good point. I never cosidered the moisture in concrete. Thanks Dale

Dick, I have looked for pre lube 6 but cannot find it. Can you tell me where it can be purchased? Thanks in advance.
