    '63 Powerglide

I am a new Vete owner ('63 Split-Window) as well as a new NCRS member. I have a small problem, at least I hope it's a small problem, with a leak in my transmission. It would appear the leak is right where the shifter enters the housing so I am assuming it is an o-ring. I have drained the oil and removed the pan but am unable to determine how get at this o-ring to replace same. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

    Re: '63 Powerglide

Ron, I'd suggest you purchase a shop manual for your '63.

I'm not versed on powerglide, but in looking at the shop manual you are correct in thinking that an O-ring is used to seal the actuator shaft. It appears that a number of bolts have to be removed to get at the shaft to remove it and replace the O-ring. But, its too complex to describe in text, and even the manual illustrations aren't entirely clear without having the trans in front of you to put the close-up illustrations in context.

Frankly, were I you, I'd reassemble it, put fluid in it and take it to a transmission specialist.... unless you can coerce one to make a house call; probably a simple job for an experienced trans mechanic.
