I am rebuilding the Carter WCFB carbs on my 57. I have cleaned the rust off of the linkages and base with a wire wheel. What is the best way to protect them from rusting again? I have been told that the bases were originally black oxide and the linkages were plated. How can I accomplish this without spending $700?

Re: WCFB restoration
Short of investing in a home plating shop, you're stuck with having individual pieces replated by a professional service (AND risk losing them!) and you'll QUICKLY understand how the $300/carb restoration fees came to be. The alternative is to use the various Eastwood plating 'look-alike' spray paints, but don't expect the judges to confuse the resulting surface finish for real McCoy plating!- Top

Plating
Mike I do a lot of plating and parts restoration. Linkages were zinc or cadium plated. Caswell sells small plating set ups go to there web site and I think they have a picture of the carb you have that a customer had done and sent them a photo
I use a dichromate soulution over zinc to duplicate cadium and you can't tell the difference. I started out small and worked up to a larger set up now I do all my own plating and have saved a lot of money. And they have manual you can buy and it will tell all the steps from zinc to chrome. Any ? feel free to ask me.- Top
