    Decal Placements

I need input on where to put decals on a standard suspension early 64 on the following? 1. Shock absorbers, front and rear, upper or lower section, inboard/outboard, distance from upper or lower mount. EK/EM label? Color? 2. Front Springs, ED, placed front/back/side and the number of coils from top or bottom? Color? 3. Does anyone know the correct labeling for the radiator and surge tank for an early 64, I am confused about placement of the green paper label, I'm ok on the foil, is there a inspection tag with the number 3 that goes on the radiator/and a inspection tag number 8 on the surge? Does the green label cover the part number/date code? Should there be a yellow rubber stamp with a CWT 10 mark?? What materials are the number 3 & 8 made of?

    Thank you!

    Lots of questions here....

    (1) Inspector's mark decals appearing on radiator and overflow

tanks were adhesive backed green paper with black numerals

available from many restoration parts catalog houses. Some

controversy exists over '3' here '8' there and whether there

were cases of '3' tags, double '8' tags, Etc. Think you'll

find most NCRS judges cut slack on exact number as well as

precise physical placement of these tags because folks were

in a hurry back then and we see some variation in the few

known original cars that have 'em intact.

    (2) On radiator, inspection tag was typically on the RH side,

center of the radiator's upper. Would NOT be placed to

obscure other radiator marks, stampings, Etc. But, would

    be rather hastily applied (cocked/skewed).

    (3) On expansion tank, I've seen the tag on the dated end of

the tank both high and low, as well as on the side facing

passenger compartment as well as on the inboard upper surface.

In my book, it's a 'how do you feel' issue on physical placement.

    (4) On the CWT ink stamp, it was originally a white ink, but the

underlying paint of the radiator was asphalt based (like frame)

and with heat/cool cycles, paint and ink tended to migration

mix over time appearing 'yellow' or off-white in hue. Rubber

stamp as well as ink is an off-the-shelf item in the Long Island

catalog. Take a few 'test' stamps before hitting your radiator.

Tendency is for the ink they supply to transfer in a 'blotchy'

manner while factory originals were nicely solid in consistency

    of white ink/paint uniformity.

    (5) On shock and spring sticker/label, there remains controversy

over correct size/font of shock stickers. My guess is several

versions were used over time and may have varied based on Delco

producing plant location. Again, folks were in a hurry when these

parts were produced and precise location of labels probably DID

vary. Consult your NCRS Judging Guide as to what's considered

'correct' placement and bear in mind, most judges are simply

looking for the sticker/label to be present and readable as we

know there WAS variance at the factory in terms of placement.
