C2 Gas tank filler neck location

I just installed a new Quanta reproduction gas tank and holddown straps in my 65 convertable.
Should the filler neck be exactly centered all the way around in the opening of the rear deck??
Looking at it from the rear of the car it is centered left and right but more to the front of the opening than to the rear of the deck opening.

    Thanks in advance,
    Floyd

In PRODUCTION, I don't think that any of the 63-74 fuel tanks end up being EXACTLY centered in the rear deck filler opening. However, they were usually very close to being centered. I really can't tell how far off yours is from your description.

If you loosen the tank straps, you can likely move the tank enough to center the filler neck, as long as it's not way off to start with. Also, the removeable fuel tank support attaching holes on the left side (if I recall correctly) are slotted which allows a little lateral movement of the support. In doing so, you can probably get it more centered than most were in PRODUCTION.

Floyd - I just went out and checked on my '67 coupe and the filler neck is pretty much on dead center. So along with the adjustments as Joe has suggested, I'd take a look and make sure the anti-squeak pads are all in place and the appropriate thickness. Pete

        Floyd,

Just looked at my 66. The filler is about 3/16" left of CL and 1/8" forward. Tank has never been out that I can tell. I don't think these were all centered accurately. My 63 is about 3/8" to the left of CL.

Joe, I had loosened and moved the removable fuel tank support lateraly to center the filler neck in the rear deck filler opening, that part is ok. I loosened the new tank straps, but I couldn't get them loose enough without the retaining nuts coming off, very tight fit on the straps. My original straps seemed to be a little longer or had more flex in them than the new straps.
The filler neck is approximately 2 inches forward of center (toward the engine).

          Regards,

Pete, Thanks for checking for me.
The anti-squeak pads are the originals and are all in place.

            Thanks again,

2" is way too much. You're going to have to do whatever it takes to loosen the staps and re-position the tank.

Thanks Michael for checking and the reply.
My filler is on the CL but about 2 inches forward. My old tank was on center in all directions. I just put the body back on after a frame off restoration. I put the new tank on before before the body drop so I know everything is attached correctly. It was difficut to get the new tank strap bolts through the tank support and the retaining nuts on. The straps just didn't seem like they were quite long enough.

                  Floyd,

At first, I thought this was a slight alignment problem but if it's 2" forward of it's proper location and refuses to move back, I would agree with Joe Lucia and suggest you remove the tank. Wish I had a better answer.

Wasn't there something in the archives about using longer bolts or something like that to allow you to maneuver the gas tank into position, cinch it down until the straps take on the right shape and then replace the correct bolts? I am vague on this one.

                      Gary,
I got some longer bolts today at Ace hardware and I am going to try to do as you suggested. Thanks for the info.

I am going to put in longer bolts, then try to move the tank around, if that doesn't work then I will have to remove the tank for further inspection.
                        Thanks for the help Guys.

                          Michael, Joe and Gary

I posted previously about my 66 tank being positioned to far forward. Mine was only off by about 5/8" to an 1" at most. I cannot remember who replied and said to position with longer bolts then move to the shorter. My problem ended up being the gas tak seam in the rear of the tank needed to be bent down. It was forcing the straps to pull the tank forward.
