I have a 63 300HP Powerglide car I am trying to sort out in preparation for a PV. The driveline has a little "slack" that is taken up when placed in drive or reverse. It is not a loud clunk but is enough to be felt and heard. Would this be normal for a powerglide? I removed the driveshaft. All the U joints are tight. There is some freeplay inside the transmission when the tailshaft is turned back and forth. Likewise there is also some freeplay inside the differential housing when the wheels are turned. Do I have a problem?

Re: Driveline "Slack"
Gary, I've got a 65 coupe with the powerglide. It has a similar clunk when you place the car in drive or reverse and is most noticeable when it downshifts. While I think it may be some slop in the differential, I have had several owners of powerglides tell me it was common. I'm sure they didn't do that when they were new. I've had my powerglide rebuilt, so I know in my case it isn't coming from inside the transmission. Often, clunking is associated with the front differential snubber. I've replaced that, so that isn't the source of the problem either in my case. I will eventually have my differential rebuilt. Hopefully, that will cure the "clunk". Good luck in isolating the problem. If you do find a solution, I would be interested.

Re: Driveline "Slack"
Gary,
When Slushboxes are not making a clunk sound when put in gear they are dead. I hope the judges know that. You'll be fine as I'm sure there will be plenty of people there in their 60's that remember. That is if the part-timers hasn't already set in!

Re: Driveline "Slack"
Idle may be to high or bands need adjustment .Rear planetary gears are spinning in park or neutral gear. When you go in to Drive or Reverse from park or neutral or you go from drive to reverse they start spinning .
So if the idle is to high or band clamping drum adjustment is too loose you get a bang.
Or again your pinion back lass is out of specks , you get a bang.
So try adjusting your bands first and also check pinion back lass.- Top

Re: Driveline "Slack"
I agree with JR. This is actually near normal for a powerglide but it just sounds worse in a Corvette than in a pass car, ESPECIALLY a 63 Corvette. Almost sounds like there's something coming apart in the diff when put in gear. It may have gotten a bit louder over the years/miles but it's still considered normal. I drove a PG 63 when it was about five months old and I thought the diff fell out when I put it in gear.- Top

Re: Driveline "Slack"
I can't speak for PG's but I have usually associated clunks when dropping into gear as a problem with the forward differential rubber doughnut. It the four or five cases that I have looked at the rubber doughnut was just about gone, resulting in a serious clunk upon accelerating or decelerating. Have you looked at yours? This parts is readily available from most vendors and takes a tad more than an hour to install, mostly because of the tight quarters.
