Clarification? C3 vin sequence to trim tag date

How does this work? Is a vin sequence number for the car assigned at the time a body is assigned a trim tag that is date coded with the letter/number sequence?

I'm particularly interested in cars during the '70 thru '72 era. I am a bit puzzled, as I know of vin # 10931 with a G26 date and vin #10945 with a G25 date.

How can this be?

A single station was used to assign both trim tag and VIN tag...a clerk had this responsibility along with key code assignments...well I know this for later years and I suspect same is true for early C3 production years.

Its also well known that bodies were pulled from the line constantly for paint and body work repairs. In those early year though, the tags were assigned at the end of the body cycle and just before the trim line. I believe Terry's question is getting at confirming both date codes are for the same production year.

But then again...this was production work and plant workers hardly paid the attention that we do to this today...it wasn't a big deal!
