    1969 frame shim markings

I have owned many original and unrestored 69 corvettes. They all had numbers designating the number of shims on the frame in whie chalk not slashes. Well I began to clean the the underneath of my convertible. I washed it down and found a rear number in green upside down and slashes at the end cap at the frame at the same side. I was wondering if anyone had seen numbers and slashes used together. I can email pics.

Yes, numbers and slashes were used together. If a lot of shims were required, they sometimes used a number + slashes. I don't know why they didn't just use the total and put that number down and forget the slashes. Actually, I've always wondered about that.

      Jonathan,

Originally, the frame shim count was put on using hash marks only. Eventually, in the late 60's I believe, the hash marks were replaced, optionally, with actual numeric characters.

The reason hash marks were used prior to 68 or 69 was the fact that they read the same upside down or right side up. When the frame shim check was performed at the start of the chassis line, the frame was upside down in the fixture during this operation and it would have been difficult and confusing for the workers at the other end of the chassis line, where the actual shims were added, to read these numbers with the chassis in it's now upright position.

When the procedure and location on the line changed in the late 60's, the chassis was then right side up when the dimension check was performed so the numbering system would have also been right side up.

I suppose some of the workers still prefered the hash mark method over the numeric and continued it.
