C2 Powerglide Leaks in Winter Storage??

My 1967 is kept in secure, commercial storage for the winter months November through April. Last winter there was a pool of transmission fluid (~one quart) underneath when I visited in February to remove the seats for refurbishment. I had driven the previous summer with no leaks at all so I put that down to another car that occupied the spot. (The cars are moved from time-to-time.)

Two weeks ago I brought a fellow by the garage to give me an estimate on paint. Again there was a pool of transmission fluid underneath. This time the car had not been moved since late October. I am perplexed by this as I drove the entire summer of 2004 with no leaks! I am sure: we had a interlocking stone driveway put in and I check things regularly with the 1967 and my daily driver. Is there some form of spit-up mode for the Powerglide within a storage condition? This is the strangest thing....

Paul, I believe there was a post several weeks ago about the same subject. Try a search. I think the responses were unanimous that the gaskets shrink while in storage, therefor leaks appear. When the car is back in normal use, you'll find everything be ok.

Thanks. I think I found that thread. Looks like drainback from the torque converter is the culprit. I didn't see the mention of gasket shrinkage but that makes sense.

I have ordered a FelPro gasket. I have used that brand on my oil pan and they work well.

I don't believe new gaskets will help the converter drain back problem. This is just a powerglide characteristic. GM didn't design them to sit for months at a time.

If it's a design problem then I will live with it. No harm done on the FelPro gasket for $16.00.

I had a 95 olds that did the same thing, except it did not leak that much as it was driven every day. It only leaked in the winter and never in the warmer months. I found out by checking different things, that it was the rubber hoses. The rubber shrinks up when they get old, loss of elasticity, and of course, are more plyable in the warmer months. Just something else to check.
