How to shine '81 rear emblem

My rear emblem is pretty dull looking. (The one that says "Corvette" on the rear facia, not the crossed flags on the gas cap.)

1) Anyone know what it looked like from the factory? Brushed aluminum? Polished aluminum?

2) Anyone know for sure what material it is? I assume it is aluminum, but it almost feels like plastic with an aluminum coating. The reason I ask is that I was considering taking some polishing compound and Mother Mag Wheel Polish to it, but wouldn't want to ruin it.

I don't have you answer , but any thing plastic can be wet sanded using 1500 then buffed out to look good. I've said this over and over for so many years about doing this to your hard top rear window that people started doing it,and to their surprise it works.

Use a window polishing product like Novus. It is used in a 2 or 3 step process of taking the scratches out and improving clarity; and finally polishing the area.

I'm not familiar with the part you decribe, but it's possible that it is chrome plated plastic. I would start with some Semi-chrome or Mothers chrome polish and a clean cotton rag. You won't hurt it with either. It you get a dark black residue then it's an aluminum piece.
