My 71 ls5 is the original block with the correct casting number and cast one month before the vehicle build date. My problem is that when the engine was rebuilt it was decked and all of my stampings are gone. My main concern is if i sell the car for that 67 427/390 that i am looking at. along with the points i will loose if the car is judged. Should i have the block restamped or try and have the number raised by the acid etching method or leave it alone and tell the potential new buyer of what has happened. The motor was decked before i got the car!

Re: block stamping
Jeff, If you have the car judged with a blank pad you will loose 88 points out of a possible 4510. If you have the block restored/restamped incorrectly you still could loose 88 points. I would make every attempt to search previous owners of your car to ensure that it is the original engine. Please feel free to Email or phone me and we can futher discuss your problem in detail.

Re: block stamping/The board is back!
Thanks John for all your efforts. Hope you have success with getting it to run on Netscape, that's all I've got at work.
Regarding the block stamping, I would tend to leave it alone. As was pointed out, this is an 88 point deduction only.
If you were to attempt a re-stamp and things went wrong, you then could be accused of all sorts of immoral things. Even if you had it restamped PERFECTLY there are still no broach marks, so you have still gained nothing.
The only time this will really matter is at time of sale, and how much the prospective buyer cares about the stamping pad or how much faith he puts in what happened to the block during re-build.
my 2 cents Mike

Re: block stamping
You know Jeff in my opinion it`s not worth the hassle for the judging points and besides, by restamping the block in order to justify the authenticity to a potential buyer, you are falsifying the car. Even if it is the original block you are just going on assumpions because you are not the one who has had it decked and all you are trying to accomplish is to justify what someone else has done to the car in the past. You should enjoy the car for what it is, and don`t loose any sleep over the missing codes. I have yet to see a Corvette drive by and had anybody remark that the engine code is missing....
