Re: 1957 spark plugs
Sounds like "spark plug non-foulers", which used to be in the J.C. Whitney catalog (and maybe still are) - used to see them also in the "Help" section at auto parts stores. They were short tubes with external head threads at one end and internal threads at the other end for the spark plug that spaced the end of the plug back out of the chamber so they weren't directly exposed to oil in the mixture from bad rings or valve guides.- Top

Re: 1957 spark plugs
John,
Thanks John, that sounds likely. I give away my age a little when I recall seeing those devices you mentioned on the counter at Pep Boys in the 60's. They had a display of a spark plug trying to fire in the oily environment and then with the device installed. I had to put one on my '56 Mercury - before I pulled the 312 and installed a 383 Mercury engine. Those were the days...

Re: 1957 spark plugs
Davi, They are sort of a thin steel ube which has a external diameter such to allow a valve sping fit inside it. Tube covers and shields about 1/3 of the entire spring. The other end of the tube is formed but open enough for the valve stem end to extend through it. The shedder (ube thingy) and is then trapped between the top of the valve spring and the round valve keeper (holds the split ring keepers). There would be a shredder for each valve stem. Sorry for the poor explanation. My '56 Heads, each valve stem and spring came with shredders. Regards,- Top
