C1 (58-62) Top of Front Fender Chrome Molding

Like most 58-62 cars, the molding strips on the tops of my fenders don't mate well with the headlight moldings. So I need to adjust these strips to the rear. Will I need to remove them from the fenders in order to do that? They've been on there for 20 years. If I loosen up (all 11 of) the speed nuts holding them to the fender, will that allow me to move it back?

    Chris...

If the strips were never removed, best they stay put... getting to the end speed nuts under the dash/inside fender well is a real job. If the mounting holes are slotted, you may have a chance to move them backwards. Best look at the headlight rings. The chrome extension can be worked down a little, using a two part epoxy will hold just as good as the rivets. As you stated, most extensions do not mate well.

      Chris...

My particular experience has been that I've removed all the nuts. Some times I had to remove some of the forward part of the strip. Many times I've used some very small washers on the forward portion to raise it up for a better fit and then used dark caulk under that portion to somewhat disguise it. Also, I would be surprised if just loosening the speed nuts would allow more than a tiny fraction of an inch of movement. Can't hurt to try, though. That part of the car does look a whole lot better with a good fit. Good Luck, Dennis

They polish easier when off, too. *NM*

Funny you should mention that - the part about one of the nuts under the dash/inside the fender well. One of the reasons I'm undertaking this project is that I've got the kick panels off and some of the interior out for other things. What the hay? Might as well do some other stuff while I'm in there. That fit always bothered me.

I sorta remember putting these things on 20 years ago. Don't remember particulars, but seem to remember 1 or 2 of the nuts was a real bear. Where is the hole you're talking about? Towards the front or the rear under the dash?

Also don't remember the holes being slotted. I thought the studs on the chrome strip slid back and forth.

            Chris,

You are correct that the studs on the chrome strip slide, Some Bubba guy slotted mine years ago. Made life easier and the nuts covered them up, so they are still slotted.

You might want to take a close look at the last stud at the tip by the door. In both the '60 I had and the '58 I have the end stud hole was not slotted. All of the others were. This one is under the dash and a real pain to get to on the early cars. If I remember correctly the '60 had a hole directly under it in the dash support frame work which helps alot compared to the '58. The other challenge will be getting the speed nuts loose without breaking a stud. Hope this helps.
