I need some of the "expert" advice that is always available on this board. First, can someone identify this brake booster? It is for a mid-year Corvette (64-67 type) and has the number 701 stamped on the tab in the 10 o'clock position. Also 1C89 is stamped into the face of the booster beside the plastic valve. Anyone know what these numbers designate? Now for the improtant question............who have you guys had some success with for rebuilding and replating boosters? I understand that the "accepted" color is gold cadmium, but I have seen MANY original cars wearing boosters with a silver color and they are supposedly original. Is this silver color acceptable or is the gold cad the only recognized color? As always, thanks for your help. Rex NCRS #8089

Re: Mid-year brake booster
Rex,
If the number you have is 7011 instead of 701, it would be correct for 65 and 66 only. (except 65 w/drum brakes) See if the last character is visible.
Not sure who to recommend for a rebuild but as far as the color, it was originally somewhere between silver and gold. Difficult to describe but it looked like a silver base with the typical red, blue and yellow colors running through it. Most restored boosters come back from the rebuilder in gold instead of the correct subtle colors.
If you remove the front half of the shell, the plating inside is usually in excellent original condition so you can get an idea of the correct plating color. Show this to your plater so he can try to duplicate the color.- Top
