    75 Headlight Switch

My headlights have not been opening as they should and I have figured that it is the headlight switch that needs to be replaced. I have not yet received the new switch nor begun installation. Does anyone have any experience with replacing this? I've been told that it is fairly difficult and could be time consuming? Does this sound correct? Thanks for your help.

To replace the headlight switch you must remove or, at least pull forward, the left side dash panel. Once the panel has been removed, replacing the headlight switch is relatively easy. Actually, I recommend removing the panel since if you just pull it forward, you can distort it while you're working on the switch. Be very careful, though, when you remove the panel lest you damage it. Some folks feel that it is necessary to lower the steering column to remove the left side dash panel. But, I've had success in removing mine without doing so.

To add to Joes cautions, be VERY careful if you choose to attempt to replace this switch by removing only the corner. The material this panel is made from, ( I believe it is a resin based product ) , becomes very brittle with age and heat and does break very easily when moved into a stress poaition and if that is not bad enough , the reproduction part is absolute garbage constructed on an ABS backing that is of throw away quality so, don't break it. Good Luck

Yes, I agree. I absolutely DON'T recommend trying to just pull the corner of the dash pad forward. At a minimum, you have to pull the entire dash pad forward.

My experience changing the switch on my '78 was to remove the left A/C duct and go up from the bottom...I don't believe there is a great difference in location between '75 and '78 switches. The hardest part was mastering the release button to remove the switch knob. Corvette Fever had a good "how-to" article on this job last year. If you're interested, e-mail me with your fax number and I can send it to you.
