    66 sb oil pan replacement

I need to replace the oil pan on my 66 327 NOM engine. This is proving to rather difficult. Does anyone know of a good quality rear drain oil pan that will work? I just need something that looks "close", 4 or 5 quart.
    Thanks Clark #42490

    Clark----

Depending what you mean by "close", I can tell you that there is NO other pan offered by GM that has a similar configuration OR a rear drain as compared to the 63-74 small block Corvette pan. Also, there is no aftermarket pan that I know of that is close to the original pan's configuration and has a rear drain. In fact, I don't know of a GM or aftermarket pan that has EITHER one of these attributes, let alone BOTH.

Now, some of this depends upon just how "NOM" that your engine is. If it's a pre-1980 block, then the above applies. If it's a 1980 or later block, then the above might not apply, depending upon what you have.

Thanks for the input Joe. Acutally, the 327 is a 1966 casting, just not numbers matching block. The pan has been beat up pretty badly over the years. I can probably straighten some of the dents, but was just looking for a good replacement. What do you recommend in the area of side drain pan?

            Clark-----

For a side drain, I recommend GM #360450. This is the 75-79 L-82 and 69+ Z-28 pan. To use it, you need to change the oil pick-up, upper dipstick tube and dipstick, though.

If you add external oil baffle GM #3927136 with 14087508 studs, you have one of the best wet-sump set-ups that GM ever put on a small block, too.

                Joe,
On a related subject as long as you have your parts book open does GM offer a drain plug for 66 sb with magnetic tip? Not for judged car obviously. I recall some other posts where it is stadard on 65 396 but wasn't sure if plug interchanged.

Yes, they do; I don't still have the parts book open, but I don't even need to open it for this one.. The magnetic drain plug is GM #23011420. This plug is not correct as to head design for 53-67 Corvettes, but it will fit perfectly for all 1953 to early 1996 Corvettes.

The pan in that item is a pan that the seller SAYS is a reproduction Corvette pan. Anyone can SAY anything. You'd be surprised at how many people in this world have beliefs, including some strongly held ones, that are based upon what someone TOLD them.

Anyway, this is NOT a reproduction 63-74 Corvette pan. It's not even close. It is somewhat similar to the 75-79 Corvette pans, but it's not what one could call a "reproduction" of even those pans. It will work, however, for a 63-79 Corvette small block. That's all that it is; a pan that will work for any 63-79 Corvette small block.
