Wheel weights; one or both sides?

        Mike,

According to the 66 AIM, weights could be added to either side of the wheel. I don't know if this is true for years other than '66.

Re: Wheel weights; one or both sides?

Mike's got it right, Gary. On sharks, weights should only be on the back side of the wheel. You will a puzzled look and a head shake from tire change technicians when you tell them you only want weights on the back side of the wheel. There he is with a machine that will balance the wheel to a gnat's eyelash, and you are requesting he use half it's capabilities.

You will get deducts if the clips are visible on the outside of the shark wheels. It was origianlly done that way to avoid weight interference with the four fixed clips on the trim rings. I have never seen weight configuration judged on sharks...not easy for old, er, husky judges to get down to see behind the wheels. They could be judged on the spare, but to my recollection there is no mention of weight configuration on the 68-72 judging sheets.

Ya ain't never judged with the "Real Deal" Ballard on exterior. He would have "issues" with the weights being on the outside of the wheel or having metric conotations

Wheel weights; one or both sides; mid-years

                Dick,

Would your "real deal" colleague have an issue with weights on the outside for a '66? I assume you were referring to Shark cars only and not mid-years. Yes?

                  Now That You Mention It...

I did judge exterior with "Real Deal" in Waco, and he WAS looking for weights on the spare. Don't remember him sliding up under any cars to check those on the backside of wheels though. Of course, an owner would be nuts to put weights on the spare of a judged car...unless, of course, he had period weights. My spare is perfectly balanced with no weights!

Working with John Ballard at Waco was a pleasure and an education.

Re: Wheel weights; one or both sides; mid-years

Let me repost this. Gary, I am not knowledgeable enough about mid-year cars with hubcaps to address your question, but 68-72 with P01/P02 hubcaps, yes it would be an issue. Logic would tell me that, yes it would be an issue on mid-years with caps but you better ask someone more knowledgeable that me.
