    1976 Bumper Change Over Question

Does anyone know which month Chevy changed the rear bumper cover on the 1976 from having the indentation for the logo, to the smooth version?

    Thanks!

Re: 1976 Bumper Change Over Question

The '75-77 JG book (Judging Guide) is vauge on the effective date of this change stating simply there was an early version and a late version. Text of this type generally suggest the NTL (National Team Leader) and his team members are unsure of the exact date....

There are two ways to go in such cases:

    (1) Call/write the NTL and see if there's a better consensus than what's currently defined in the JG book).

    (2) Attempt a self-forensic determination by looking in the AIM (Assembly Instruction Manual). IF the change required a part substitution (PN1 -> PN2), the ECR block of the page in the AIM book covering the installation of that part ought to reflect the revision date.

Bear in mind, the second method will NOT fully define the change as it will only document the EARLIEST possible date the second generation part was approved for use in production. Often, the assy line continued to exhaust on-hand inventory with cars being produced in 'mixed' mode for various periods of time until the existing inventory of PN1 was fully used up.

In that case, you're on the horns of a dilema absent knowing which specific part your car actually shipped with. But, judges are typically lenient in these cases giving the owner the benefit of the doubt and accepting either the early or late part for a 'reasonable' time after the effective change date....
