    1965 327/300 Distributor Cap Part #

    Gentlemen:
There are a million dist caps available...most of them are not correct for my engine. I was docked a few points at the last Regional because my cap was not correct. What is the correct GM part number and marking on a to be NCRS correct?

    Thanks.

Your copy of the Judging Guide tells you what the judges are looking for...a Delco Remy D308 (NOT a D308R) with the top embossed 'Delco Remy' and 'Pat. Pending' withOUT an 'R' symbol between the two. Other forms of the D308 cap (with the 'R' symbol or 'Pat No. XYZ' vs. 'Pat Pending') are considered later era, service replacement components and should net you a 20% originality deduction for a Configuration difference....

        Jack:
Thanks for info in the correct cap. My 65 Corvette Judging Manual does not mention the Delco Remy D308 as the correct cap...it just describes the correct embossing..."Delco-Remy" "PATENT PENDING". I will now be on the look-out for a D308. Is there a GM Part number associated with the Delco-Remy Part number D308?

The problem being with just looking for a part # is the part evolved over the years from a patent pending, to a patent pending R, to a Patented #...... You will have to visually inspect the cap to see if it is actually what you want. I saw several in the new issue of the Driveline. You should be able to find one there if you do not want to do the swap meets and recycling yards

                As Dick says .....

best to examine the cap --- you can't count on the Delco number D-308/309 [with or without the "R"] to mean anything. These were (as Joe L has often said) an applications designation, not a design or visual configuration identifier.

If you walked into your GM dealer in 1965 (or'66 or '67) you would be sold # 1942654. I've followed eBay distributor cap offerings for a while and have only seen 2 of these caps in boxes; one was brown bakelite with copper contacts Pat. Pending and no "R". The other was Black with aluminum contacts, with the rest the same as the first. The Delco # was D-309 on both these 1942654's (not D-308).

Other variations seen on eBay (no guarantee of original container):

-- D-309R GM # 800061 (2 examples), both brown Bakelite, both were Pat Pend., one with "R", the other without. BTW, if you went to your dealer in Jan 1970, he would sell you this GM # 800061.

                -- D309 (no "R"): # 800061; brown Bakelite w/copper contacts, Pat # 2769047, with "R".

-- D-308R: GM # 1971244; Black bakelite with patent "047" number, aluminum contacts.

                -- D-308: # 1932018; Black w/aluminum contacts, Pat Pending (no "R").

So, according to NCRS, only 2 of these GM part #'s meet judging requirements.

I was beginning to understand the part I needed until......

My only hope is to find a cap at a swap meet that I can hold and scrutenize completely.

You have obviously spent some time on disributor caps....Thanks for your input.

                        Dwight,

Go to one of the big swap meets Bloomington, Carlisle, etc. I bought a correct, used, Delco-Remy cap for my '64 that is equipped with a 327/300 last August at Carlisle. There were a few correct NOS ones still in the box for (gulp) $600, I paid less than $200 for a used one in great condition. If you have access to a junk yard, I'd go that route first. You also might want to determine if the point deduct is worth the price. I was/am looking for all the points I could get when having the car judged since it is driven to all events.

                        Best Regards,

Remember the same cap was used on all GM cars (except Oldsmobile) from 1958-1968 at least.
