Best practice for working pot metal headlights

Say, is there a special method to working with pot metal. One of the headlight buckets has a little wave about 1/16" high and 1 inch long right in the center along the front edge. Curious if it should be cold worked or heated in an oven to stress relieve it first or anything like that.

Should be no problem with gentle, light sanding to take down a high spot.... But, don't attempt to bend/twist a pot metal part!

        10-4...DO NOT ATTEMPT TO BEND!

Probability of cracking is virtually 100 percent. Take down slight high spots with fine file, sandpaper...apply body filler to the low spots, and stick it with a fork, cuz it's done. Be happy and don't fret...it'll be more, er...perfect than when it left the factory.

Thanks for the tips, I thought by perhaps heating it for a few hours at 350 degrees or so would stress relieve it enough to prevent it from cracking when attempting to work that little ripple out. Guess I better skip that idea for now.

            Thanks again.

Take it from Mr. "It's Only A Little Bit, It'll Be Fine"...getting pot metal repaired can be very expensive. After that experience, I concluded that pot metal has zero malleability.

ROFL. Pot metal is like cast iron or cast aluminum, it don't bend. Steel and non-casted aluminum bend, pot metal doesn't.

I have seen MANY headlight buckets that are cracked at swap meets. They got that way either by impact (didn't bend) or by attempted repair (didn't bend then, either).

I found that out after trying to put a little more bow into my 68's wiper grill.
