    Install 66 427 Fuel Pump

    Hi Group,
I looked in the archives for anyone who had installed a fuel pump on a '66 427 engine, but no hits? Anyway, my pump is dead. I got a matching number pump and started the install. The issue I'm having is getting the pump to seat to the block. I get to about the 1/2 way point and it feels as though the pump housing will break. Does the pump need a spacer plate between the pump and the block? I did not see one when I removed it. I have looked to see if I dropped it in the chassis or if its setting in my shop, no luck. I looked in my shop manual, which basically said " Install the push rod then install the pump and tighten" not happening. Any ideas? Have you had the same issue?
Thanks for the help in advance.
    Jim

        Jim------

You have to make sure that the cam is on the "base lobe" and that the fuel pump push rod is, consequently, in its fully "retracted" position. Nevertheless, it will still require some pressure to get fuel pump flange pressed onto the block mating surface. Once you know that the cam is on the "base lobe" and the push rod fully retracted, install the pump and the retaining bolts. Then, you can use the retaining bolts to carefully "pull" the pump flange to the block. You must make sure that the pump is properly installed AND that the push rod is on the pump lever, though, or you'll break the ears off the pump flange. If the pump flange is very far off the block before you start to pull it in, then something is wrong. Start over.

It is very easy to get the pump's lever on top of the pushrod and then it will never seat without breaking something. You can try turning the engine (by hand preferred or bumping with everyone clear) until you can push the pushrod up inside more as others have said. A glob of grease will often hold it long enough to get the pump on if you don't waste time.

You can also remove the plug below the pump that is in line with the pushrod and use a small screwdriver or long nail or similar thin item to hold the pushrod back inside while you slip the pump lever under the end of the pushrod.

Use some caution that what you use can be removed once the pump is mounted.

                66 427 Fuel Pump Installed - Thanks!

                Joe, Mike and Gary -
Hey thanks a lot for the info. I pulled the push rod plug and after screwing around for awhile got the lobe in the correct location. Pump installed. Too bad the shop manuals don't explain this.
                Thanks again,
                Jim
