C1 - Clutch Spring and Pedal Adjustment

As I re-assemble my '59 and consult the ST-12 (Clutch section CR), I'm curious as to the clutch linkage design. I know the 58 through 62 are different from the 55, 56 and 57's. Was the larger spring on 58's and later designed to overcome the stronger clutch springs and assist the driver in depressing the clutch? Should the thinking on setup be to adjust the threaded rod so a line drawn between the upper and lower spring attaching points is slightly above the center of the cross shaft so the free pedal adjustment can be made without loading up the throwout bearing? I'm just checking to see if I'm on track! It's been 25 years since I tore the car down and I'm a little fuzzy on how it came apart!

    Brad...

If I remember right...remove the clutch fork push rod swivel, push the clutch fork back until light pressure is felt on the clutch pressue plate. Move the swivel to align with the hole and install. The funtion of the clutch over-center "GODZILLA" spring makes sure the throwout bearing is backed out. A bracket on the cross shaft allows adjustment for the over-the-center Godzilla spring. If a multi-finger 10 inch clutch is installed, it may be necessary to remove the GODZILLA spring. Due to centrifugal force at high RPM, the clutch pedal could stay on the floor. This spells bad trouble and only occurs about 5% of the applications.
    Hope this helps the Fuzzies....

The over-center point adjustment for the upper Godzilla spring bracket is covered in the Clutch Section of the ST-12.
