Tool to remove door lock knob on '66?

Can someone tell me who sells the special tool to remove the inside door lock knob on a '66? I can't seem to find it in the catalogs. I have the large tool to remove the window cranks, but I don't see any way that this tool will work on the door lock knob without destroying the door panel. Am I missing something?

Not sure, but I think the diameter of the spring clip is like (same as?) the window cranks. Someone else will probably correct me on that.

Problem is, most tools are wide, and "drag" or push against the door panel. Perhaps a real narrow version, with properly curved finger ends?

Requires same type tool. Door panel is very difficult to depress in this area. You can even do it with a small screw driver, carefully.

I made a hook out of a coathanger. make one end a closed loop so you can pull it with your finger and the other end a tight hook. Try to catch the top of the c clip.

I've also read to drag a rag behind the lock across the top of the clip in hopes of catching the top of the c clip.

Door panel removal would be sooo easy if it weren't for this bugger!
The secret tool is a pick with a short hook or 90 degree bend at the tip.
You first need to identify which side of the know the closed end of the clip is on. That's what you want to hook with your tool and pull on it.

It's not a bad idea to put tape around the depressed area of the panel to avoid an accidental scratch or chafe mark.

When you re-install the knob, always orient the clip in the same position. Next time, you'll know which side to go fishing on.

I've tried the rag-snag technique and wasn't real successful.

made a great one from a sparkplug boot tool

JCWhitney and local auto stores sell spark plug boot pullers that look like a two tine fork with a screwdriver handle. I regapped the curved tines to fit he clip perfectly (years ago), and have used the tool a dozen times to easily remove the knob without damage to the door panel.

Actually Eastwood sells a tool just for this purpose. Having said that I went to a junk yard and I a cut the vent pull on an older car and bent it at a 90 degree angle. This is spring steel and holds better than a coat hanger, plus it is much thinner and easier to use. This also works as a great fuse puller.

If you want go the pick route as Mike suggest, Sears sells a set of "Craftsman Professional" picks that I now consider invaluable. The set includes a curved pick that would great on lock knobs and also straight pick that works great for cleaning and aligning windshield washer nozzles. The rag snag method did not work for me either.

I heard you take the plastic lid of a coffee can and you put it between the window crank removal tool and door panel. Helps protect the door panel.

I've used the coat hanger tool many times but I always flatten the end of the hanger with a hammer first. Then a little curve at the end will work fine.
