63 Fan Clutch - Fred Oliva

Anyone know if Fred is still doing the clutch thing. I've sent emails but no response. Will try calling tomorrow.

Fred did my clutch last year. I'm getting ready to install the engine in my 63 and started going through all my restored parts and goodies (Yeah, I know I should have done it a while ago but you know how it goes). In looking at the clutch there are no markings at all on the front. My understanding (from the JG also) is that there should be the markings on the front.

Would you agree that this does not look correct/complete? And if not, if I can't get Fred to help me out, is there someone else?

    Thanks,

    Joe..

    Contacting Fred Oliva

I have found that you have much better success getting in touch with Fred via phone in the evening than you do via his e-mail.

    Best regards,
    Charlie

If you don't mind waiting 7 or eight months, send it to him....he told me 3 months. I believe he still advertises in driveline.

I don't think that the broadcast code stamping is a big deal. However, you can purchase a set of letter stamps in an office supply store. Using these stamps and an well-inked ink pad, stamp your own. The originals were just ink stamped like this.

When Fred rebuilt my unit a couple of years ago he did ask for the vin number so he could properly date it.

I've had the same problem with my 63--no ink stamps on the front. I've been meaning to call Fred to get an answer, but got busy. If anyone gets a stamp made, count me in for 1/2 the cost and I'll ship it back when I'm done.

Thanks all for the suggestions. I have no problem stamping it myself but didn't know if there were some specifics (Font, Size, etc,) to look for. I'm sure I can dig up a picture somewhere of what it should look like.

                  Sounds easy enough, thanks...

I found a GM NOS Eaton fan clutch I had stashed away that I bought back in 1979 from my local chevrolet dealer. It has a "CK" ink stamp on it but the font and size should be the same. Does anyone want a digital picture of it? If so, email me at jwest@oppd.com and I'll send you a picture.

Re: 63 Fan Clutch - Fred Oliva

                          Hi,

The CJ/CK broadcast codes originated around the late 1965/early 1966 time frame. 1963 and 1964 cars should NOT have this stamp. I'm not sure, but I think current judging manuals state that these cars SHOULD have this stamp. This is a mistake. The original prints show an engineering change to add the stamp in June of 1966.

When I submitted the fan clutch material for the initial judging manual revisions, I believed that the broadcast codes were used on all midyears. It wasn't until later that I found this to be untrue. I thought this fact found it's way into later revisions of the judging manuals, but I can't be sure.

Also, date codes during this period (1963/64) were sporadic. Sometimes you get 'em, sometimes not.

Font styles for date codes and broadcast codes for 60's fan clutches are different than the ones used on modern clutches. My suggestion is, if you are going to get some stamps made up, scan the face of an original clutch to create an image of the face, and use a graphics tool like Corel to overlay the letters on the top of the image. Then, print the overlay and take it to Kinkos to make up the stamps. I do this all the time -- works like a charm.

I also read with interest a post that stated a clutch I rebuilt does not pull enough air. My question is, is the car overheating? The amount of air pulled is a function of the viscosity of the fluid used. I use a bit heavier fluid in some cases, and the recommended viscosity in others (depending on the clutch style). Recently, I've had some feedback that my rebuilt clutches were pulling TOO MUCH air (ironically, it's the style where I use the exact recommended viscosity). As such, I've been looking into using a thinner fluid to REDUCE the amount of air pulled. To the poster, send me this clutch back & I'll add some even heavier fluid if you like.

Finally, I must apologise to all those who trying to contact me by email. Since I'm a one person shop, rebuilding clutches has been a top priority. Answering emails has been last on the list. As some have mentioned, our turnaround time has increased a whole bunch. People to whom I quoted 3 months were pretty upset -- rightly so. What happened was that I got hit really hard with clutches in the middle of last year. My current turnaround time, is 4-6 MONTHS. Please try to remember that I, like the most of you, have a day job also -- thanks for all your patience.

                          Hope this helps.
