    Belt and suspenders

    I am replacing my 66 distributor with a rebuilt unit. It came without the distributor wick that lubricates the cam. Doesn't the grease behind the fiber cam follower arm on the point set do this? (The grease that comes in the little capsule in point sets)

    Is the wick also necessary? if so what oil is used on this; 3 in 1 oil?

    I would assume that the wick is added insurance against fiber contact arm wear between points change outs.

    In my estimation, the hard fiber follower would act more as a wiper against the lobes rather than a lubricator. Especially with the heat of the engine that's transmitted up into the distributor.

    I'm sure the distributor Guru's will probably shoot my theory down, but that's my story and I'm sticking to it!

      Randy,

      I think you are correct in that the grease from the capsule placed BEHIND the fiber arm on the point set will be OK. There should be a small piece of paper in the point set with directions showing which side of the fiber arm to place the grease. I think the grease is di-electric grease. If you ever go junk yarding the distributor wicks can be located in old cars and used but I don't think it's necessary.

        You need Delco Remy Distributor Cam ...

        Lubricant, U-1901 # 1948792. About once a year they show up on eBay. This 4 oz. tube should last you several lifetimes.

        There's another Delco Lube wick kit (?) #1852935, which contains the white plastic post and a circular foam ring, impregnated with lube. Usually the foam disintegrates when touched, so the best bet is to scrounge the scrapyards, as others have suggested, for the dense felt (square) wick.

          Are you saying Delco U 901 is used on the point set and not the generic grease that comes in the capsules with the points (or LIC)?

          I can get the wick from LIC but why? Isn't the the grease on the cam follower portion of the points sufficientlubrication?

          I've justlooked in the chassis service manual. Cam lubricator is supposed to be replaced, never oiled. No mention of grease on the leading edge of the cam follower.

          I think for a car driven a 1000 miles a year grease on the leading edge should be suffucient. Thanks to all.

            Standard Ignition sold points for Chev. with a wick built on the rubbing block and a small capsule of cam lube. Its been a while but the part # used to be DR- 2270 XP. The DR- 2270 did not have the wick or the lube. I have used these on my 62 chev truck. Dale
