    Re: Vintage Air temp control

why can't a make/break thermostat, like home A/C units use, be wired into the A/C electric clutch thru a relay????

      Re: Vintage Air temp control

      Clem,

Vintage Air does have a thermostat mounted below the evaporator and the glove box. It senses the temperature over the cooling coil and turns the compressor on and off. You can adjust it by reaching under the glove box.

        Agree with Roy

I think the biggest fault is the outside air, or lack thereof, on VA.

The air intake for the fan unit is very close, although above, to the right side vent. Some simple modification of the air intake and the right side vent could allow one to use the right side vent pull as a temperature control in both heating and cooling.

I've thought about just blocking off the lower half of the the right side vent grill so that outside air would be directed upward towards the fan intake. This could work as a temperature control, but only when you are moving.

Also, a redesign of the outlet end utilizing the original wye fitting for your heater box could eliminate the necessity of providing new chintzy radio side panels.

I hope Vintage Air is listening in on this thread! Maybe somebody ought to tell them to tune in.

I would like comments on installation in other years beside C2. Specifically a '61 for my needs.

I put a Hot Rod Air unit in my 59, and was very pleased with both the fit and the quality!

              Old Air Products

Here is some info on the Old Air Products system that they call a Hurricane system. Here are words from their webpage at www.oldairproducts.com

              Corvette Hurricane Series:
"In-dash Air Conditioning, Heating, and Defrost Combo mounts behind the dash reinforcement bar with no loss of glove box. System includes reproductions of right and left factory air ducts. Custom integrated switching of factory heater controls offer an original appearance without adding additional holes in dash or console. Unique design provides tri-level cold or warm air flow and easily out performs the original GM factory A/C & heater system."

There are some photos on their website. Overall their system looks nice, but in my mind have some serious "cons". Mainly, you have to move the battery to the drivers side from the passengers side. Not something I wish to do. Also, the box is rather bulkly under the dash - more than the others. They supply a piece of trim to attempt to block it from view, but it in effect just uses up more of the foot room for the passenger. One thing about this system that is interesting is that you have the option of using a GM style A6 compressor, so your underhood appearance would be most factory like, at least with regards to the compressor. Like the others, this system uses a thermostat to control a/c temp by raising the temp of the cooling coils. Best I can tell is doesn't appear that this system requires you to modify your dash controls, but it does require minor drilling elsewhere, somewhat depending on the year of the car. I am not sure how it handles center vents, but it doesn't look like you replace the factory radio side panels. Retail price is $1250.

Anyone who has installed this system can post replies.
