I need a ram horn style exhaust manifold for the right side. This bolts to a set of NOS sidepipes. The front of the manifold extends past the block and there is an alternator bolted to it. The motor is a 1970 400 cu.in. small block in a 1964 coupe. I couldn't get at the numbers on it to read them. Any idea how long these were made, (my mechanic says only in the '60's). Are they common? And where can I get one yesterday? Any Help? Thanks. Brian

Re: Ram Horn Exhaust manifold

The manifold that you probably require is GM part #3814970. It carries a CASTING number of 3797902. This is a 2-1/2" outlet manifold. The manifold with 2" outlet is GM part #3817806 with a CASTING #3750556. Since you have a modified engine, it is hard to say for sure which you require. However, I believe that the 2-1/2" would be best. The 3814970 is still available from GM and lists for $134.73. The 3817806 is discontinued, but available in reproduction.
Since you are in a rush to obtain one, if you will post or e-mail with the city and state that you live in, I will tell you the closest dealer that stocks the 3814970 manifold. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Ram Horn Exhaust manifold #3750558
Thanks Joe, I have since managed to get the number off the manifold and the number is 3750558 with the letters "RH" under it. The other side (that isn't broken) is 3988088 with "RH 40" next to it. Any idea what these are off from? Are they still in production? Thanks alot for your help!!!- Top

Re: Ram Horn Exhaust manifold # 3750556 not "
Brian----
The GM casting number 3750556 manifold is the GM PART #3817806 manifold with 2" outlet that I spoke of in my previous post. It is GM-discontinued, but available in reproduction for about $200. This is not a rare manifold and you should be able to find them in used form pretty easily, but the used Corvette parts sources that I could recommend to you probably wouldn't sell you one "cheap". However, I believe that this manifold was used on other Chevrolet products so you might check with your local salvage yards. That's how you'll get one at the best price.
The GM CASTING #3988088 manifold that your car has on the left side was never used on a Corvette. However, in the event that the number is possibly being mis-read(which is VERY easy to do for casting numbers), GM #3989036 was a rams horn-type manifold used on the right-hand side of many 70-72 Corvettes with 350 engines. It would work perfectly on the left side of your engine application, so I suspect that's what you have. This is a 2" outlet manifold without A.I.R. fittings. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Think you'll find the part was common to other Chevy passenger cars and trucks. Try your local scrap yards. Those offering 'self service' where you walk/look/pull parts are your best bet (also called 'open' yards) because nobody will want to 'screw' with you (sort/find casting number and/or date) at a high volume yard.
Once you find, going rate is $10-50 for the part. Bear in mind, you'll need to take it to a machine shop (unless you're talented and tooled at home) to have it cleaned (bead blasted), re-studded (can't be FUN getting the old studs out!) and have the cylinder head mounting surface milled or 'trued' (originals were installed without gaskets and if you want this concours look, NOW is the time to get the interface flat).- Top

My experience says ole Zora didn't squander precious tooling $$$ creating Corvette specific parts UNLESS there was an issue of styling/performance at hand! The trick is knowing WHERE to look and this takes years to perfect -- one of the key reasons joining NCRS and getting active in your local chapter is worth it's weight in dues!- Top
