I was able to locate a 26 spline spicer yoke to replace my worn original. I noticed that the key was in a different location than on my original. I didn't notice any key on the Muncie output shaft. Are these things normal? Thanks, Bill

Re: new yoke....

There is no "key" on a Muncie output shaft, either of the 63-70 26 spline variety or the 71-74 32 spline variety. The transmission yoke can be installed in any position relative to the output shaft. If there is a "keyway" on the yoke splines, which I haven't noticed but may be there, it is superfluous to the installation. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: new yoke....
Joe,
The "keway" referred to is merely the elimination of one spline, thus giving the appearance of a keway. I have seen this on several varieties of yokes, both 4-speed and automatic, throughout the sixties and early seventies. I've never seen it on a Corvette, just Chevelles, Novas, Full-size Chevies, etc. This doesn't mean that an occasional Vette didn't have a "missing spline" yoke,
You are correct in your statement that this missing spline doesn't affect driveshaft installation.- Top
