'65 Fuelie coupe: non-posi?

A friend in British Columbia is considering buying a '65 coupe. The engine and trans are missing, but the owner says that the car is otherwise original. The differential is a 3.36 non-posi.

Was a non-posi available on an L-84?

Positraction was not required with the L-84 engine option but ONLY if the standard ratio of 3.70:1 was specified. If the optionally available ratio of 3.36:1 was ordered, then positraction had to be ordered, too.

In '63 and 64 you could order any optional engine with the base three-speed manual transmission. The standard axle ratio was 3.36. There were no optional ratios, but you could order the three-speed/3.36 combo with Positraction.

If I am reading the NCRS Spec Guide Power Team Chart correctly, it appears that for 1965 any optional engine required ordering an optional transmission, so a L-84 3.36 without Positraction was not an availablee combination, but it was in '63 and '64.

As Joe said, the base L-84/M-20 axle was 3.70 with an open diff., and this applied to '63 to '65. You could order the 3.70 with Positraction and ALL optional ratios required positraction with L-76 or L-74 combined with M-20.
