Re: Side Exhaust Reversal & Off-Road exhaust
re side exhaust reversal off road exhaust carl rose dear brandon to re install the standard rocker panels on a car modified to accept side exhaust you will need the following a set of the brackets in all depending on how thorough the previous owner was they may have been completely removed or just cut off flush with the fiberglass edge they are vaguely c shaped reproductions are about each likely they were not completely removed which will give you an idea of mounting locations you probably can epoxy new ones onto the old since they aren't really stressed components as i remember they mount to the bottom of the birdcage not the frame and aren't really accessible to tack weld new ones in place you will also need to repair the front and rear fenders if they have been cut and i think the front must be to fit the s e cover in place fiberglass extensions are avaialbe to repair the rear i'm not sure about the front you can always trace a template and erbuild the cut away area new rocker moldings depending on how authentic you wish to be the judging manual references the originals to be smooth in the area of the spear while reproductions are often crinkled i personally don't have any experience with this replace the outer splash shields under the car at the rear transmission mount there is a bracket for the undercar exhaust again depending on the previous owner this may or may not be there reproductions are available for about a new rear filler panel and bezels i don't have any experience with the off road exhaust so i'm afraid i can't comment on that i suspect this entire job will run about or so you can offset some of this by selling the side exhaust system for depending on condition seems like side exhausts are a hot topic on this list lately good luck carl- Top

Re: off-road exhaust
re off road exhaust brandon korman thanks jerry and carl for your prompt responses one thing i'm still curious about is the off road exhaust what is the purpose of them do they add horsepower due to less backflow restriction i know they are somewhat more expensive thanks again brandon- Top

Re: Side Exhaust Reversal & Off-Road exhaust
re side exhaust reversal off road exhaust jack humphrey brandon this is pretty good advice here i'd add a few things reproduction hanger brackets are available there's side see your aim originals were spot welded to sill frame and i would not attempt to epoxy which means biting the bullet pulling lifting the body for access and welding next hangers and bottom of sill were sprayed with green dichromate paint for rust inhibition green stuff do it you don't want to return here once the body is back bolted down if prior owner tried to make n add on look factory real you're in for glass work both front and rear add on cut to fit front fender restoration pieces are available but almost nobody outside long island sells the tiny metal cage supports that were riveted to the side of the front fender restoration pieces that the front of the rocker molding screwed to lots depend on how faithful a return to factory through frame you want to attempt in the end if you go whole hog you'll still probably take minor deductions from experienced judges because the back side of the front fender wheel well area was not blacked out and your glass work is going to show as a repair plus you'll have two sets of screw holes for the upper front rocker mount there are now through frame low restriction exhaust systems that growl as good as n at a much lower price plus the exhaust is out the back not in your ear on the side and you don't muck up the cosmetics stone damage of expensive n side covers a number of catalog houses like mid america are offering this system- Top

rocker trim brackets
rocker trim brackets jerry bramlett i know a nice guy in kansas who has a full set of good brackets left over from a ' that was converted to side exhaust contact me off the board if you'd like his name and number the gm off road mufflers do not sound any louder than regular muffflers to me they are much quieter than aftermarket turbo mufflers or the factory side pipes- Top

Re: Side Exhaust Reversal & Off-Road exhaust
re side exhaust reversal off road exhaust lou r i replaced the side exhaust on my with the original under car type the rocker moulding brackets hag been cut to replace thest you will have to remove the body from the frame i removed the old brackets with an air chisel and grinder i cut blocks of wood as a spacer between the cage and the j brackets i was adding i drilled inch holes in each leg of the bracket after locating clamping them on the cage i used a small mig welder to fill in the holes and create a spot weld keep a water hose on hand just in case but if all you want to do is make it look original you do not have to add these brackets back the rocker panel will be held securely with the screws in each end and the clip along the upper edge you will have to add the fiberglass ears at each end if they were removed be sure to add the small metal box to the front ear this is pop riveted on and is the front lower rocker mount i can give you a suggestion to do this if you need help good luck- Top

Re: off-road exhaust
re off road exhaust bill clupper yes the off road exhaust was a low backpressure system designed for performance use i was told by chevrolet engineers in the 's that they were a much more efficient system than the sidemounts despite the noise level of the sidepipes this engineer likened the sidepipes as putting a cork in the exhaust pipe- Top

Re: Side Exhaust Reversal & Off-Road exhaust
re side exhaust reversal off road exhaust jim jordan hello brandon if you are going to attempt to restore your exhaust to original do it correctly posted already is some good advice however be aware that you must pull the body to correctly fasten these brackets note also that the front bracket on both sides is a different configuration and is alos available in the aftermarket when installing these brackets you may as well duplicate the original spot weld this can be achieved by drilling two holes in the bracket previous to installation then mig welding the brackets on the birdcage through the holes then grind the weld smooth at the weld location finish by slightly grinding a duplicate spot weld' with a round end carbon steel porting tool this will give you a undetectable repair well worth the time spent i have done it many times with no one detecting the repair good luck jim- Top
