    1958 Value

In the next week I will be looking at a 1958 that is an original car that is worn. I have been told the paint is original and somewhat checked. The interior is the original, or the original type and decent. It has the original engine that runs good 245hp and 4spd. Also it has 2 tops and a good frame. I know it's somewhat subjective but just wanted to get a ballpark figure on it's value. As always, any information is greatlly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Is the car road worthy? Original engine/tranny? Ever been hit? A Basket case may only be worth 8k or so while a nice original should get 25k or 30k

      Mark,

Thanks for the input. Yes , original engine and trans. Slight small crack near the front bumper and roadworthy with a brake job and tune-up. - Bob

        Bob,

If the paint is truly original, maybe you could give us your assessement of it's condition.

If you have followed the string regarding base coat/clear coat vs. original lacquer and their respective durability, the condition of 42 year old paint would say a lot.

        Good luck with your inspection!

Bob, in last Sundays' Chicago Tribune Dean Kruse of Kruse International Auctions listed his top ten picks of collector cars for the year 2000 that he believes will see the greatest increase in value. In the article he listed.....you guessed it, the first car he listed was the '58 Corvette saying that "a '58 corvette can be bought for $20,000 to $40,000 depending on condition. Values should increase 15 percent or more during 2000. For optimal value, the numbers should match, yada yada yada....Matching numbers can raise the value $2,000 to $5,000 on a collector vehicle. Also for optimum value, the convertible should have the optional hardtop." Two things to keep in mind (#1) How many '58 corvettes does Dean Kruse have stashed away? (I don't know if he has any) and (#2) I have a '58 Panama Yellow, so I agree with everything Dean said. Good luck if you decide to go for it!

Happy New Year and thanks to all for the information. I will be happy to report on the condition of the lacquer paint if indeed it's original, as I' am a big lacquer fan. I will report back early next week.
