I have had good luck with a pilot bearing puller. I obtained mine at Harbor Freight and have been pleased with it. It uses three "claws" to grab the bearing ID and extract it with a puller. Years ago I saw an old mechanic fill the bearing with grease and using a steel bar the same OD as the input shaft he hammered it into the grease and the bearing came out on the bar. It worked but it left a mess to clean up. I usually install them with a steel alignment tool I fabricated, but I also have driven them in with a hammer on a socket the same size as the bearing.

just thread in a 5/8" tap

and as it bottoms out in the crank it will push out the T-O bushing

I usually use TP soaking wet with water forced into the opening and keep packing it in with an old input shaft until it pops out. No clean up as with grease. I use the same input shaft to drive it in.

I used grease in the ID of the bushing and banged it out with an tapered oak spindle, piece of cake. PT

I like Clem's method, quick, easy, and not messy. It might take 90 seconds or so to get it out with the tap.

Dave, I had a hella time getting mine out with two different type of pilot bearing pullers (three & two claw type). I finally used a Drimmel tool (it can out in less then 10 minutes). The bushing is bronze so it is real soft. I cut it in three places (4, 7 and 12 positions on a clock) I used the same bit I used to cut holes in drywall, so it won't hurt the pilot hole. I hope this might help!!

                        Jim,

I too had a real tough time getting the bearing out. I used a three finger puller (very high quality one) attached to a slide hammer. Really had to slide the hammer hard! Once out i miked the OD and compared it to the new pilot bearing bushing (LUK). New one wasa couple of thousands bigger than the one I took out! I figured this will never go back in so I turned he replacement down on he lathe to size of the one I pulled. Inserted,It waspretty snug! Regards,
