    C1 58-60: Generator heat shield

    Hi all,

In both Corvette America and Corvette Central their catalogues a generator heat shield is offered which I can't recall seeing in the AIM sheets. Was this shield installed in the cars originally (or only in special option cars) or is this a additional, non-original, protection for the generator ?

    Thanks for the help,
    Rob.

I was told by master judge that only FI cars had this shield.

      From the '58-60 JG Book....

Chassis, Section 16, Electrical System, Generator, Mount & Brace:

"....1958 right-hand hood support models had the generator mounted with U-shaped support directly to the exhaust manifold (no mounting plate used). A small heat shield is used to protect the tach drive unit...."

You should be able to find the heat shield called out in the AIM. It isn't much of a part!

At the National meet in Canada this year all cars except FI cars were expected to have the heat shield.

          Jack,

Thanks for your response. Since my AIM is a '59 version it could explain why it didn't show this item. Interresting why they decided to drop this item when the hood support was swapped to the left side. Any idea why this correlation exists ?

          greetings,
          Rob.

            Rob,
It was not the moving the generator from one side to the other that deleted the heat shield, it was the addition of the mounting plate that moved the generator further away from the manifold. Once the mounting plate was added, the heat shield was deemed unecessary due to the greater distance between the generator and the manifold.
